3-Speed Single-Speed Mountain Bike

Single-speed mountain bikes are a fun and challenging change from normal geared bikes, but the lack of gears is really frustrating on flats. Going uphill is hard as expected, and going downhill you can coast fast, but on the flats you spin your pedals and go nowhere.

I decided to add an internally geared 3-speed hub to my single-speed. I thought I might be able to keep the clean, quiet, and solid feel of the single-speed, but get a bigger gear for the flats.


I started with a 2007 Redline Monocog Flight 29er single-speed. This cost around $800 and was purchased in early 2008.  It came with a 32 tooth chainring and 20 tooth rear cog for a 1.60 gear ratio.  That 32x20 gearing with the 29" wheels is probably similar to 32x22 on a 26" bike.  The photo on the right below shows the original rear wheel.

The hub I chose for this bike is the Shimano Nexus Inter-3 for $125.  This has an overall gear range of 186% and a stated weight of 945 grams (2.1 pounds).  A normal good rear mountain bike hub weighs 300-350 grams, so the Inter-3 adds at least 600 grams (1.3 pounds).  This hub works with disk brakes.

The hub does not include ... a shifter, so I purchased the Shimano Nexus SL-3S42 3-Speed Revo Shifter and Bell Crank for $20.  This is the only choice as far as I know.

The hub includes a 19 tooth cog, but I wanted an 18, so I ordered a Shimano Nexus 18 tooth cog for $5.  This cog seems to work well with the old chain/chainring.

Rather than taking the used brake rotor off the old wheel, I bought a new Avid G2 Clean Sweep Bicycle Disc Brake Rotor for $27.  To mount this on the Inter-3 hub I needed a Shimano Centerlock to 6-Bolt Rotor Adaptor for $29.

The 32-hole hub was built into a wheel by Dave Thomas (Dave's Wheels,  I have had numerous sets of wheels built by Dave, and found them to be the sturdiest lightweight wheels ever.  I still ride all of them, and have rarely (if ever) had to put a spoke wrench to any of them.








The tables below show various calculations related to gear ratios.

The first section is gear ratios for my 27-speed 29er.  The ratios vary from 0.65 to 4.00, which is a total of 618%.  This is really what you need for a long ride in Colorado to push the bike 40-45 mph down a hill and also to crawl up a long steep climb.  Note that the original 32x20 gearing of the Redline Monocog is right in the middle of this table.

The next section shows different gear ratios with an internally geared hub and different rear cogs.  I went with an 18-tooth cog, which compared to the original 32x20 gives me a slightly easier 1st gear, but mostly gives me a bigger 3rd gear.

The last section is bike speed (for a 29er) versus pedal cadence (rpm) for different gear ratios.  With the original 32x20 gearing I had to spin at 80 rpm just to go 11 mph.  Now my 3rd gear gets me 16.5 mph at 80 rpm.

Assembly was pretty easy.  The Inter-3 seems simple and well-built.  The bell crank moves a push-rod in/out of the center of the axle to change gears.

One concern is that the bell crank seems pretty exposed.  I could easily see hitting it on a rock and breaking it off.  A future task would be to fashion some sort of shield to protect the bell crank.

Initial impressions from riding are very positive.  The Inter-3 is very quiet and solid feeling.  When you change gears you don't really notice it is there, but just notice that the pedaling effort is different.

Upshifting (into a higher/harder gear) is amazing.  The pedaling effort just changes instantly with virtually no noise or delay. Does not seem to matter if you are applying pressure to the pedals or not.

Downshifting (into a lower/easier gear) is quieter than a normal derailleur setup, but does usually make a little noise.  Downshifting does require that you take pressure off the pedals.  Under pressure the hub just does not shift, so you have to briefly stop pushing.  I wish it was the other way around (downshifting under any pressure and upshifting requiring low pressure).





I'm plannig to do the same with my bike (Kross Unplugged -made in Poland). My question is how nexus look's after 2 years? Still riding?


Well its just some experience,
Im a bike mechanic, and i prefer vintage bikes but mostly hub gears, the key word for me is "durability"
Im using 3 sp nexus since 4 years now,
First i used the one with drum brake in a cargo bike for a year(36 teeth chaingring front 18 teeth cog rear),which means in this case 130-150kg load plus my weight 60 plus about 25-30 was the bike...6 days a week..daily 25km
I never had to touch it i just replaced the drum brake because of the heavy use, i fell in love with these hubs from that time. 
Then i used the same version on a simple commuter bike, for almost three years, on the streets of London
daily 30-35 kms sometimes 80km trips.It was lovely but the chainring on the front was a bit small(34 teeth)
So i just put a Dura Ace crankset on the front,i removed the second chainring and i set the bike up with 52 teeth chainring on the front and 16t cog then.half year later i build these hubs into road bike rims then i put some thin road tyre on.The result was one speeding ticket from the police:D( only because they catch me at the red light:D) 
I sold this bike with a smaller chainring,but for one reason,to make a new bike for myself
Italian road frame and guess what kind of hub i have...of course inter3 but with coaster brake.
As a check i disassemble all of them in the beginning every second month, then every half year,then maybe next time i will do it next year winter time.All the time,everything was perfect, what i really had to buy once another cog, and both my cargo bike and the other bike with bigger chainring,were a little bit "chaineater"(one year one chain!!!) but with a smaller chaingring or just with the default one probably enough to put oil on the chain sometimes,then you dont really need to replace them for many years.
So if you still reading my crazy story one thing i can know for sure these hubs are almost undestroyable.
As a personal opinion i still love them more than the new ones with more gears:)



No problems at all.  I did not put a lot of miles in over the last year, but whenever I do take it out I don't have to touch anything and have not had any problems.  Very happy with the Shimano Nexus Inter-3.


Do you know if the Nexus Inter-3 SG-3D55 is compatible with a belt drive system?  


I'm afraid I don't know, and don't know enough about belt drives to even give an opinion.


I'm running a single speed 29er and have been eyeballing this hub ever since a post on MTBR about it. I know this page is a bit old, but hows the hub held up? Any issues, rebuilds, failures? Thanks


I have not had any problems with the 3-speed Shimano Nexus Inter-3 SG-3D55.


My subject line didn't show up. What type of riding have you done with it? I'm looking to use it for moderate to technical trails. I mostly ride single speed on our normal trails, but wish for the added range when on out of state trips. 


I mostly ride it in Bear Creek Lake Park here in Lakewood, CO.  Mostly hardpack singletrack, with lots of short climbs/descents and some rocky sections.  I usually do an interval style ride with 2-5 minute sprints up hills with recovery during the time between hills.

Green Mountain is another big mountain biking area here in Lakewood.  Mostly hardpack singletrack that is not very technical, but longer steeper climbs than Bear Creek Lake.  Trying to the Green Mountain climbs with the gearing on this bike would be tough, and I have not tried it.


I had the idea to do this and now that I've started collecting parts I have a question. What size spokes were used for the nexus hub? I've got the hub and noticed the spoke holes are larger than traditional hubs. Also were brass spoke head washers used at all?


I don't have those details.  I sent the hub to Dave's Wheels ( and he built the wheels.  If you want me to visually look for washers if visible, or take calipers to the spokes somewhere, let me know.

Added update:  Another thing I did not think about was fixing rear flats.  Removing a rear wheel with the Shimano Nexus Inter-3 looks pretty easy, but I think I would need an open-ended wrench that is not part of my normal bike carry tools.  Anyway, I would use multiple flat-prevention methods to avoid the hassle.  I always use True Goo, but with these will also use thornproof tubes and/or Mr. Tuffy liners.  Perhaps I will try tubeless, since I am running with sealant anyway.


The brass washers would be under the spoke head at the hub flange. If they aren't there could use measure the spoke close to the flange. The holes in the hub are almost 2.5mm and common spokes are 2.0mm. I've built a number of wheels but a much more experienced build recommended I use either larger(expensive) spokes or head washers. Also how well is this setup working for you now that its been almost a year?


The spokes are 2.0mm and I don't see any washers.  The wheels have been solid and trouble-free, like all wheel's that I have gotten from Speeddream.

I have a Redline Monocog that I've been riding around town and on trails for the past four years. Awesome bike! Never though about putting a geared hub on it. Maybe I'll have to give it a shot. Thanks for the write-up! -Dan Hickstein


I would be great to have a Labjack capable of recording to a SD-card for those mobile applications...


Our new T7-Pro device will have the ability to run standalone (datalogger) and store to a uSD card.  Watch for it next month.
