Sorry, but not much more information is available at this time.  You will be able to talk to them with any software, such as DAQFactory.

I am not sure how feasible it would be to monitor a 1x1 mile nature preserve.  The range of these devices is similar to WiFi, so perhaps you would need 9 repeaters set out in a 3x3 grid to cover the area.  The repeaters, however, need more power than the motes, so inexpensive battery power is not an option for more than perhaps a few days.
